We are celebrating the Award of our FIFTH INTERNATIONAL GREEN FLAG FOR BIODIVERSITY 2017!
Today we had a visit from the Biodiversity Officer of Fingal County Council, Mr. Hans Visser.
Hans brought the Green Committee from Room 5 around the grounds to see where we can improve our school for Biodiversity.
Here are some of the things he suggested.
Firstly, he was amazed with how big our grounds were! He thinks we are really lucky!
Big trees are not suitable near walls because their roots will crack the walls in the end. Shrubs are better. We have great berries on the Pyrocanthia for the birds to eat all Winter. Birds also love nuts! HAZELNUTS! Just like the ones in Nutella! We can plant nut trees. And flowers! Lots and lots and lots of flowers! Insects love flowers! Birds love insects! Bats love to eat insects! The oak tree grows really slowly but it lasts much longer, some other trees grow much quicker but then they die quicker. If we squash too many trees really closely, it would be like putting the four children from the Green Committee into a little room with a cup of water and a slice of bread. They wouldn't grow! They wouldn't have enough food or water or Space!
Hans says we have a great selection of trees. He helped us identify many, such as willow and he knows the name of many of the wildflowers, such as guelder rose.
