Warning re: Faulty bikes! Important! Watch this video on checking your bike, made by Frank Duff of Duff cycles for our school! Well done to all on National Cycling Day yesterday! We had 104 bikes in school yesterday with even more at the Senior School. Unfortunately Dr. Bike, Frank Duff of Duff cycles and his assistant Mikey, despite working right through coffee time and lunch time could not get through so many bike checks in one day. They will return in the Autumn when they also hope to visit the Senior School to finish. Frank offered 20 per cent off on all repairs to children or adult bikes at his shops in Donaghmede or Santry until then to those who mention St. Laurence school. We are very grateful to Frank and his team who are on their second visit to our school helping to maintain a safe fleet. Many teachers joined in for a "cycle for 20 seconds" challenge. If you haven't cycled for a while, why not try it before Cycling week finishes on Sunday? On that subject, Frank drew our attention to serious safety problems in the case of very many of the bikes, where wheels were only barely attached with loose nuts and handlebars and saddles were at an unsafe height. We made a little video on how to carry out these adjustments which you will find on the school Green Flag pages, We have had a very busy term working towards our Flag for Sustainability, with a school tour to Sonairte and Kilbarrack Fire Station, the Burrow beach, planting of our wildflower meadow under our micro forest (please respect this area and ask small children to leave all the flowers growing for the bees to enjoy!) and today the grand opening of the Bug Hotel in our Organic Garden. We have enjoyed healthy food and healthy living through our sports for all day and football marathon. Let's all work together for a safe, fun summer where respecting and learning more about the environment takes pride of place, leaving wherever we visit better than we find it. We are very grateful to Duff Cycles, Donagmede and Santry, for their kind assistance in doing a safety check on our bikes recently. It was a great help to us to get lots of cycling practice in following our lessons provided by An Taisce and Fingal County Council, with help from the parents' committee fundraising. Here's to a safe season of cycling for all!
