We are celebrating the Award of our FIFTH INTERNATIONAL GREEN FLAG FOR BIODIVERSITY 2017!
Watch these videos to see how to make great stuff from recycled materials!
We held a grand "Walk on Wednesday" to get the ball rolling and as always, we leave places better than we found them! Teacher managed to pick a few papers, her rule is to pick 3 a day. She explained to the Junior school about her friend Eric from America. He could not believe all the rubbish blowing around where he lived in the City Centre. So he decided not to be always feeling annoyed about it and to simply pick up 3 things every day. It is a start! Why not try that; just wear gloves or use an inside-out plastic bag and stay away from glass or anything disgusting ok?
When I was a girl and we would go any place, my father used to do just like Eric. He used to say, "I always like to leave a place better than I found it!" I think that is a pretty good motto, do you? What he hated the most was glass broken on the beach. Once we saw a child with a very serious cut. They had jumped off a sand dune onto an upturned broken bottle. The cut was so bad it needed lots of stitches. But it was on Dollymount beach, far from help. It was scary for that child! Luckily my mother was a nurse and she could help him tie the cut with a t-shirt, the foot was bleeding a lot! I still remember that day and it was back in the 1960s! So leave the picking up of glass to the grown-ups, it is sharp. Remember to take your glass things home though!
Below our very first committee at St. Peter and Paul's BNS, now St. Laurence's, meeting with our adviser from Fingal County Council on how to tackle our Litter and Waste challenges.
Competition
Best Begged/Stolen/Borrowed Teacher's costume.
Our Policy on Dressing Up;
Beg
Steal (well, from your family, that is reasonable. Actually if you ask them, they will probably loan it to you.)
Borrow
e.g. Teacher's Outfit 2015 and beyond; Begged -the opera cloak of my dear friend, Mary Birmingham R.I.P., I think of her when I wear it. All my friends want to borrow it for a special night. It has in fact been in the dressing-up box in the music room now for a few years but it is actually a little long for the children. I begged it from my good friend, her daughter in law, because she was passing it on. It replaces an opera cloak - cashmere- given to me by my good friend and colleague, Peggy O Connor who wore it when she was expecting her 3 daughters and never wanted to see it again, but it went to a Christmas Nativity Play once, is lost a few years. Ah well. It was old. It was very handy for yard duty and football matches on cold days, the velvet is a little stylish for that. Borrowed.
-tiara; Teacher's good friend Anne Marie from her walking club.
-wand; my daughter's, bought for her in Disneyland by her lovely boyfriend when she said all the other kids had a wand and she didn't. Thanks, Audrey. & it actually works. Lots of us tried it out in school, granting wishes. Please let us know when they come true, it is interesting. We believe in magic.
Below our 2015 Prizewinning Beg Stolen Borrowed outfit, borrowed from teacher's husband who had worn it last year. The best by a mile. Good luck Gillian, modelling her stunning outfit in the staff room the day before our Halloween break. ...we are all looking forward to news of your new baby.
Spongebob was purchased with our prize money from Fingal to be our Litter and Waste Mascot, travelling Ambassador for all matters to do with rubbish!
We did a litter pickup on our Walk-on-Wednesday parade! We always do when we are out and about. Just 3 things!
Egg box daffodils. Is there anything an egg box can't do. Well done, Gaye McDonald's class. And well done Joanna Coughlan who was baking celebration cakes for us. Again. How does she stay so trim and fit, making cakes all the time?
