Enjoy our slim volume of poetry, written by First Class.....not this year, can you guess when?
Round Tower
Hand in hand from our sunlit room
2 by 2 in a train,
Past the yellow digger,
Down the dark green lane,
We enter the grey gloom,
Well back from the dungeon dark,
To the musty stone room
Where our ancestors left their mark.
Lawrence, Patrick, James, John,
Marion Sharles had children-a-plenty,
Ellinor, Mabel, Allison,
Some say the Lady had 20.
I wish like Lady Sharles
I’d a dog to warm my feet,
As we climb the spiral stairs,
To drive out the chill and give some heat.
In the cells where the monks said prayers.
We said a hushed “Our Father”
And teacher calls a roll,
“Matthew de Cruis, David Rung, Robert de Mora’s heirs,”
That’s the register of 1326
We wave to going down the stairs.

Just right, the taste of onion in my sandwich
Some Tayto, peanut butter, ham,
Frosties, (teachers disappprove),
Skips, nutella and jam.
The wind blowsthrough the beech trees at the church lane,
You hear it when half the class are in the library again,
When we go on a message to the other rooms,
We giggle when we hear other classes singing tunes.
The smell of inky new books and woolly big school jumpers,
The office where the air from the whirring copier’s dry.
Flash! sharp clean tiles, and diesel blows through windows
From the field where all playime round the newmown grass we’ll fly..

Summer Holidays
“Wake UP Mam, is it time for the beach?”
Tickle Dad’s toes and wake him too,
Throwing water, chips from bags,
Sun and skies of Skerries blue.
Kieran Barry, Victoria Browne, Robert Byrne, Shane Connolly, Hazel Harford, Emma Wade.
The Day the Stuffed Crocodile called on his way to Africa.
Multicoloured, mostly green,
Eyes a black shiny beam,
Crackling body, squeaking nose,
Off to Libya with baby he goes.
Kieran Barry, Victoria Browne, Emmet Hughes, Adam McNaney, Donna Savage, Emma Wade.
The Day Baby Sarah Came to Visit, (with Crocodile)
Baby Sarah; soft brown hair,
Romper suit - pink,
Baby blue stare,
blinkwink.
Rainbow flowery blanket,
Downy feathery locks,,
Green dinosaur (I’d stamp on it!),
Snowy lacy socks.
Kieran Barry, Victoria Browne, Shane Blessing.

The Haiku Poem
The Haiku is a type of poem which originally comes from Japan . The first line has 5 syllables, the second line has 7 syllables and the third line again has 5 syllables. The poet has to try to fit everything he or she wants to say into just those 17 syllables
The Day Soldier Derek Losty came to Visit
Four medals shone gold,
Three yellow and red arm stars,
Sky silver beret.
Peacekeepers protect
From under the sand bunkers
Career force defend
Beirut, Lebanon,
The fitness test every year,
UNIFIL danger.
Rifle bullet skims,
Norwegian scorpion tanks
Bazoukah comrades.
Plane, train, soldiers dead,
Twenty four years of weapons,
Egypt, Tel Aviv,
Nobel, Israel
And the scarred, proud fears of the
11,000.
Sinai, Golan Heights,
For the peace batallion,
They never fire first.

Christmas
Christmas time is here,
It brings us happiness and cheer,
It makes us bright with delight,
When Santa comes at night.
Emma Halpin
Santa coming on Christmas night,
Rudolph’s nose shines so bright,
I saw Santa in the sky,
I opened my windows and I said “Hi!”,
He left the present under the tree,
I couldn’t believe he came for me.
Shane Connolly
Jesus’ birthday will soon be here,
Christmas is getting very near,
Singing and parties and presents galore,
I JUST CAN’T WAIT ANYMORE.
Dan Sheehan
Christmas Eve
That sound - Is it Rudolph?
No.
Is that Santa putting our toys town -
Is that Rudolph?
No.
This is him I think,
I hear Santa’s bells!
No?
I’VE FOUND HIM!
Maria Cowley
Christmas is Coming
Our Lord was born on Christmas day
And we love him in every way,
Santa will be coming with his reindeer,
Oh I can’t wait, Christmas is so near!
Jesus
Jesus we know was born in a manger
It kept him warm and out of danger,
With Mary and Joseph and the three wise men,
He felt safe around all of them.
Jesus is a friend of mine,
I think of him most of the time,
Jesus , you know, is a king,
He can hear the angels sing.

Oh No! It’s Raining Again
I sit at my window,
There’s nothing but rain
I lie on my pillow
I’ve got such a pain,
Please, please stop raining!
I don’t like getting wet,
I want to go out and play,
You bet I will get wet.
Kieran Barry
Rain is a nuisance, we all get wet,
We;ll get soggy and mushy in the drizzle I bet,
There’s floods and mud and sleet,
My friends and I can’t go out to meet.
When I am in my bed I hear a crackle of rain
And I think, Not Again!
Dan Sheehan
Wipers whooshing the rain today,
I wish I could whoosh the rain away.
Driving through a lot of floods,
Then slippy slimy greasy mud,
Now I’m freaking,
Umbrella’s leaking.
Shane Connolly
Drenched I was,
Soaked I was,
Another drizzle-dizzle day,
Slipping wet and dull today,
Hailstones, spitting lashing too,
Glory Hallelu!
Niamh Hogan
What a dull and chilly day!
It’s rain! Here it comes! I -
I think I’ve got a chill,
Have not got my brolly to keep me dry.
James Barry
I do like when it’s raining
Even though I get wet.
The flowers and plants are watered,
But it’s PUDDLES I like best!
Emmet Hughes
The rain kept falling through the day
I really longed to go out and play,
So on with my boots, coat and hat
And I went out, just like that!
I splashed in the potholes and had great fun,
From out behind the racing clouds came the sun.
Sometimes the rain is refreshing,
But not when it’s pouring and lashing
I hate a day that’s drippy and sticky
I come in with my shoes all soggy.
The best thing when it’s cold and dull
Is to go to the kitchen and make myself full.
When the day’s a long old drizzle
I like watching my sister being a Divil.
Looking out the windows I see puddles everywhere,
I’m stuck indoors, it just isn’t fair,
I don’t want to play with my Connect 4,
My puzzles, my paints, today is such a bore.
Oh look, oh look, it’s finally going away,
Here comes the sunshine brightening up my day,
At Last!
I’m going out to play.
Hazel Harford
MOVIE MAGIC
I love to go to the movies,
Especially at night,
But when the lights go down,
I get an awful fright.
When the ads come on
I go and get some coke,
When the film is over and we go home
I’m glad that I am not Home Alone.
Parent Trap
With my family we had a great day out,
All the children got to laugh and shout,
There were two little girls in the story
And oh dear, were they two little tories!
We had drinks and popcorn and ice-cream and more,
We had opal fruits and coke and sweets galore.
The film was a comedy, we laughed ‘till we cried
And then we sighed.
The Smokey End.
Dan Sheehan
The cinema is great,
I love the sweets and candy,
But the popcorn with extra butter,
Yum! Try it, it ‘s just dandy.
Emma Halpin
Off to the cinema we did go
To watch the funny film show.
I had a load of sweets to eat
And a drink beside me in the seat.
For two whole hours we sat and laughed
At the funny film in the dark.
When all was over and the lights came up
Me and my friends said, “Good Luck!”
Natalie Murphy
Popcorn crunching
People laughing
Film showing cartoon trailers
Slushing slush puppy
Crisps crackle crunching
Projector shining at the big screen
Plush seats folding

Mark Sweetman
On Friday night I couldn’t get to sleep,
I was so excited and my alarm kept going “beep”.
On Saturday I was going to the cinema
With aunt Milly and my younger cousin Lorna.
At the cinema I got my ticket from the box
And on the wall I saw a poster of Cunning Mr. Fox.
At the food stall I bought a packet of eclairs
And saw another poster of the Three Bears
As I sat in my seat the film came on
With Bugs Bunny saying jokes and singing a song
When the film was over I sadly had to go
A good time was had by all, what a funny show!
Hazel Harford
I love to go to the cinema and get some treats
Then I rush in to find my seat
The cinema is so cool and groovy
I get so excited going to see a movie.
The strips of lights look like juicy things to eat,
Attached to the floor, they guide you to your seat.
The cinema is so warm and cosy
Sometimes my sister goes for a dozy.
I am so thrilled to have the chance to watch the silver screen,
And dip my spoon into my runny scoops of ice-cream.
All I can say is, aren’t the movies great?
I can hardly wait for my next movie date.
